In addition to sliding an event around to move it in the Calendar Android app's event creation quick-peek interface, you can touch your finger to the dots on the top or bottom of your event's outline and then slide up or down from there to make the event longer or shorter. Nifty, no? And there's one more piece to this puzzle yet. Simple event slidingĪfter you've entered that concealed quick-peek view, remember this: If you decide you need to shift your new event around to another time, you can simply touch and hold the outline on your screen and slide your finger up and down to move it. Wouldya look at that?! You can actually minimize that event creation interface down and browse around on your calendar behind it.Īnd that's not all. The next time you're adding a new event on your phone and you find yourself wondering what else is on your agenda around that same time, tap the line - or, alternatively, swipe downward anywhere within the main event creation area of the screen. See that barely noticeable light-gray line at the top of the Calendar app's event creation screen? The one that looks vaguely like an arrow pointing downward? JR After years of using Google Calendar on Android, I just noticed a curiously camouflaged option that'll change the way you create events on your phone. And the Android Calendar app doesn't do much to help offer any broader calendar context while you're in the midst of adding in a new event. I've certainly been there (well, not to the podiatrist, specifically, but in the general event brain fog situation). What else did you have going on that day? Did you need to schedule the event for 2:00 p.m., or would 3:00 be better? When was that podiatrist appointment, again? You open the screen to add the event in - then you suddenly find yourself facing a foggy mental blank. Tell me if you can relate to this: You head into the Calendar app on your phone to create a new event. ![]()

It’s somewhat analogous to professional auto racing leagues, where teams develop and test technologies that eventually trickle down to millions of consumer vehicles. The ultimate goal is to drive the drone tech landscape forward, Horbaczewski says. drones can’t use GPS or any remote guidance from humans. All of the apps must run on identical hardware, designed by the league and powered by an Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier chip similar to the one used in some self-driving cars and autonomous robots. So he struck a deal to jointly create a contest, dubbed the AlphaPilot Innovation Challenge, to attract programmers to develop cutting edge drone racing apps. It’s not the state of the art.”īut last year, Horbaczewski discovered that aviation giant Lockheed Martin was looking for ways to stimulate software development for computer vision and A.I. “We’ve always defined a high-performance, autonomous drone as one that can fly through a complex environment with the same skill or better than a human and that doesn’t exist,” Horbaczewski tells Fortune. Those factors limit the computing power and sensors that can be included on board and complicate the task of programming the machines. Drones are low-weight, low-power craft that have to operate at high speed in three dimensions and often crash. But he quickly discovered that no autonomous craft existed that could come close to matching the skills of human pilots. Races are shown worldwide via broadcasting deals with NBC, Sky, and other networks and backed by sponsors like BMW, Seagate and Lockheed Martin.įrom the start, DRL CEO and founder Nicholas Horbaczewski wanted to include at least one A.I.-piloted craft per race. After races in coming months at three more venues, the team with the fastest drone overall will take home a $1 million prize from sponsor Lockheed Martin. The nine participating drones will face off later on Tuesday at an indoor course in Orlando’s Addition Financial Arena, navigating around obstacles on their own at speeds around 90 miles per hour. ![]() ![]() ![]() “MARTA used to be the trendsetter” on pay, he said. The union says MARTA’s pay rates are far lower than comparable transit agencies nationwide and now even lower than some regional partners like Cobb and Gwinnett counties, where Dunams says he recently negotiated new contracts. He also claimed that current General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood has incorrectly told employees in town hall meetings that MARTA is working on a cost of living pay increase, when the negotiating team has said no, creating a “conflict of stories.”īut MARTA says its “offers have all been substantially higher than have ever been negotiated,” including an 11 percent raise approved in the previous contract. Dunams says he has proposed raises in the range of 13 percent and that MARTA’s have been as low as 1 percent to 2 percent. Dunams praises Parker’s intent to “give a nice contract” in the next negotiations but says MARTA now says it’s a “burden” to give a substantial raise.Įxactly what is being sought is itself a matter of dispute and neither side gave specific numbers. 31 was a one-year extension, negotiated as a pandemic emergency move under former General Manager and CEO Jeff Parker, who died in early 2022. “ATU’s overall concern about outsourcing contracts – which we regularly do to support cleaning in the stations – is an attempt to increase union job headcount at the expense of cleanliness, efficiency and improved customer experience,” said Fisher. However, it also defends outsourcing of jobs. MARTA says it is “a proud union employer” that continues to offer fully funded pensions. MARTA says Jackson Lewis also represented the transit agency in the 2019 contract negotiations, “in which MARTA gave employees the biggest raises they’d seen in more than a decade.” The union is protected from “union-busting” by federal laws, MARTA says. Among the MARTA tactics now, Dunams said, is a request for a five-year rather than three-year contract that would make the next negotiations coincide with a union leadership election. The firm is widely criticized in the labor movement for representing firms and institutions that are attempting to stave off unionization and for a history of allegations of hardball tactics, though many of those date back more than 20 years. “We must draw the line, however, on their desire to now negotiate in the media.”ĭunams says MARTA is the one dragging out negotiations, in part through the hiring of the “union-busting” law firm Jackson Lewis to join in the talks. “We remain ready to settle this contract, but respect ATU’s insistence on a protracted process,” said MARTA spokesperson Stephany Fisher. MARTA says it “has been eager to bargain in good faith” and blamed the union for dragging out talks that began May 31, 2022. He said he spoke at the MARTA board meeting “because I’m trying to hold my members off… but if the company doesn’t recognize the strength of their employees, the employees might make an action.” Negotiations on the previous contract in 2019 included a sick-out by bus drivers. “They actually used to call us frontline heroes and they want to give us zeroes across the board,” Dunams told SaportaReport of the first post-pandemic contract negotiations. ATU 732 President Britt Dunams joined other workers in discussing the negotiation at a May 11 MARTA Board of Directors meeting where labor officials and liaisons from regional organizations and the Atlanta Mayor’s Office were in attendance. ![]() The contract negotiation is being watched closely by labor advocates. An underlying issue is actual and potential outsourcing and the ability to attract operators as MARTA plans major system expansions. Charlie Murphy's Makee is a welcome wrinkle to this new continuity, giving fans a unique perspective into life among the Covenant. The series adds two significant, original characters to the mix in Season 1, to decidedly mixed results. That pays off handsomely in the season finale, allowing Cortana to make her choice and Chief to prove he is still capable of trusting another after facing so much betrayal and heartbreak. The series humanizes John without fundamentally betraying the qualities fans love from the games. Schreiber capably plays John-117 as a hardened soldier slowly coming to grips with his simmering emotions and a flood of unlocked memories. As much as the decision to show Master Chief's face stirred up some initial controversy, it's hard to imagine the series working as well as it does without Schreiber spending so much time out of the armor. The TV series, on the other hand, is perfectly willing to explore the man underneath the imposing armor. He's a man of few words and even fewer displays of emotion. Iconic or not, Master Chief as he exists in the games is not an ideal protagonist for a TV series. It allows the show's writers a certain amount of leeway in terms of altering characters, condensing the timeline and generally reworking the Halo mythos to better suit the television format. That decision generally works in the series' favor. But whereas previous live-action Halo fare like Forward Unto Dawn and Nightfall was set specifically within the universe of the games, the Paramount+ series exists in its own continuity, dubbed the "Silver Timeline." Pablo Schreiber stars as Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced super-soldier who exists as humanity's first and best defense against the fanatical military theocracy that is The Covenant. The premise is still more or less identical. ![]() The TV series doesn't fundamentally alter what fans know and love about the games. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a dividend stock that boasts an enviable payment history that dates back to the earliest days of stock markets in the U.S., when it was founded in 1823 as the New York Gas Light Company. This is also helpful for other utility companies that find it cheaper in the short-term to buy from BEP rather than build their own wind or solar farms. What's more, its stable of clean energy and transition power generation like nuclear energy make it a go-to source for corporate customers looking to go green. Those multi-year agreements with deep-pocketed customers help provide Brookfield with very stable cash flow, and generous dividends as a result. A video signal is a modulated electromagnetic wave that conveys image data, with the frequency of the wave determining the chrominance, or color, of the image and the amplitude defining the luma, or brightness. Ralph Baer would tell us there is a simple technical definition we can go by: if you are playing a game on a screen and that game data was conveyed to said screen by a video signal, then you have a video game otherwise you don’t. Are they the proud parents of the video game?īefore ruling on Baer’s case, we must decide what the heck constitutes a video game anyway. Ralph Baer (L) and Bill Harrison demonstrate their video game prototype. But did he really, truly invent the video game or have a valid claim to its paternity? Well, despite my glib pronouncement in the prologue of the book, the answer is a little more complicated. I don’t begrudge him any of that: the man was absolutely a key cog in the transformation of video games from backroom lab experiments to mass market entertainment, and he lived in the shadow of Nolan Bushnell much longer than he deserved. So there it is right? Extra, extra read all about it! Alexander Smith says Ralph Baer invented the video game! Baer himself would have certainly been pleased to see those words in print had he lived long enough to see this book published, as he always claimed the mantle “Father of Video Games” and defended that title against all comers. A more important statement to analyze is the claim I make at the end of this little vignette: “But Baer was the first person to suggest creating an interactive entertainment experience by conveying game data to a display through use of a video signal, so even though he never used the term in any of his subsequent documentation or patents, he is nevertheless the progenitor of what we now call the video game.” Whether this brainstorm happened on August 30 or August 31 though is really a minor matter of little consequence. Nevertheless, that’s his story, so we are sticking to it. Did he really have a meeting with a client in New York City that afternoon and then immediately scurry back up to Nashua? Its not impossible, but maybe a tad improbable. A 1966 bus was probably taking it even slower than that. After all, he was down from his native Nashua, New Hampshire, to meet a business client, and Google tells me that’s a good four hour trip in the modern day by car. In interviews, Baer usually stated he did so back at his office the day after his brainstorm, but the timeframe may not line up. For this reason, we do know that he transformed his crazy bus station idea into a formal memo on September 1, 1966. Ralph Baer was a careful record keeper as befit the meticulous, detail-oriented personality that shines through in his various interviews and in his autobiographical examination of his work in the video game business. Its nice to have a firm date like that to commence the narrative, though its not nearly so firm as one might think. So I opened on a bus station in New York City on August 31, 1966, when Ralph Baer thought to himself it might be neat to control objects displayed on a television set rather than passively consuming network programming. Clearly then, the book should not start at the beginning, but it still needed to focus on a beginning. These primordial works are examined in the book, of course, but they did not feel appropriate as a hook to draw the reader in. Its great that in the late 1940s Alan Turing and Donald Michie wrote chess programs that were never implemented or that Thomas Goldsmith and Estle Ray Mann liked to pretend in the lab that a cathode ray beam might be the arc of a missile, but there is no throughline from either of these experiments to the $150 billion industry that exists today. My goal was to document most of the early experiments using a television and/or a digital computer to play a game, but starting at the chronological beginning of these efforts does not make for a compelling opening. ![]() It is not necessary to have read the book to comprehend and appreciate the post.Ĭhoosing where exactly to start They Create Worlds was a challenge. ![]() It covers material found in the prologue on pages xviii-xx.
